A UK payment services trade association has warned consumers not to mistake credit card protection offered by regulations for travel insurance.
APACS has said that while section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act does protect people when they purchase goods abroad, it should not be confused as cover for travelling to a foreign country.
Spokesperson Mark Bowerman added that it was important for people to seek advice if they are concerned about travel insurance, while they should also take care when using their credit card abroad.
"Try and make sure you know who you are dealing with; make sure to the best of your knowledge that it is a reputable company," he explained.
"If the transaction is between £100 and £30,000 then it is beneficial to use a credit card because you have that extra protection that you do not have with a debit card."
Research by Sainsbury's released in September 2007 found that around one in five people who booked a last minute holiday deal will not have bought travel insurance to cover their trip.
